Hólar University is a highly specialized public university offering programs rooted in a former agriculture college, which offered educational support to rural communities. The university has evolved as a centre for education and research in three specialised and different fields, albeit all with strong bonds to important industries in rural Iceland: Aquaculture, fish biology and aquatic ecology. Equine science, riding, and riding teaching. Rural tourism studies, events, and hospitality management. Undergraduate studies include Equestrianism and Riding instruction, Tourism Studies, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Event Management and Aquaculture. Most courses are taught online, apart from the equine sciences, equestrianism and riding instruction, and the teaching is organized in a blended learning fashion, meaning that students come to the University for a period to study with peers and then return to continue their studies online from their home base. Postgraduate studies include Tourism, Equestrian studies and Marine and Aquatic biology. In addition, the school is a member of two pan-Nordic master's programmes: NoFri, a Nordic Master Program in Outdoor activities ("friluftsliv"), and a Nordic Master Program in Sustainable Production and Utilisation of Marine Bioresources (MarBio). Student housing is available at Hólar, as well as a kindergarten and elementary school. The Skagafjörður region also offers a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities.
